Lysis of horse red blood cells by S. aureus PSM-α3 (62.5 µg/ml; 45 min). Red blood cell lysis was measured by the OD of the supernatants at 416nm after 45 min incubation at 37°C with PSM-α3.
Lysis of horse red blood cells by S. aureus δ-Toxin. Red blood cell lysis was measured by the OD of the supernatants at 416 nm after 45 min incubation at 37°C with δ-Toxin. Starting concentration was 250 µg/mL with 2-fold dilutions. Red triangles represent the current lot 2204007 and blue squares represent the old lot 1410001.

δ-Toxin is produced by S. aureus and is translated from the RNAIII transcript, a key player of the staphylococcal quorum sensing system (agr). δToxin is a major virulence factor of S. aureus and primarily causes cytolysis in red and white blood cells.
